Uptown Tailgate Farmers Market – The farmers market continues at the Beckley Intermodal Gateway Plaza off of Neville Street.  Market hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 – 5:30 pm, and Fridays from 10 am – 1:30 pm.  If you have extra produce that you would like to sell at the market, contact the WVU Extension Office at 304-255-9321 for set-up details.

Market special activities this month include International Youth Day on August 12, Worldwide Art Day on August 14 with free artist set-up, cupcakes to the first 40 customers on August 17, BARH Community Outreach health checks on August 19 and corn on the grill on August 24.

Fridays in the Park:  Free concerts are held weekly during the summer at Word Park on Neville Street from 11:30 am until 1:00 p.m.  Lunch vendors sell food items during the event. The August line-up for Fridays in the Park is: August 14th, the Simply Jazz & Blues Festival will kick off with music by Apostle Ronnie “Diamond” Hoard, former lead singer of the Ohio Players (70’s funk and soul band known for the song “Rollercoaster”; August 21 Friday will feature music by David Runion;  August 28th, Friday in the Park helps kick off the Appalachian Festival weekend with music by Lost Cannon Bluegrass Band and Shane Ingram and Friends.

The Neville Street Market  is held on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of the month along Neville Street, the market runs from 8 am to 1 pm.  A variety of vendors are encourage to participate (collectibles, arts & crafts, produce, food, and flea market items).  20 per cent of booth proceeds benefit local charities. Contact Tickety Boo Mercantile at 304-575-8202 for details.  TheAugust 15 market coincides with the Simply Jazz & Blues Festival.

Simply Jazz & Blues Festival  will be held August 14 – 16 at Word Park and The Raleigh Playhouse & Theatre and offers a great line-up of music.

Youth Praise Night is scheduled for August 22.  This evening of praise and worship will be held on the Beckley IntermodalGateway Plaza. Contact the First Baptist Church on Neville Street for details.

Taste of Beckley – As one of several events planned for the Appalachian Festival, Taste of Beckley will be featured on Saturday, August 29th from 6 – 9 p.m. in uptown Beckley.  The festive block party will offer a variety of food, entertainment & fun for all.  Restaurants, organizations and event vendors are will be set up along Main, Heber & Neville Streets selling their specialties.  Vendors sell items on their own, so tickets are not required.  A panel of celebrity judges and the public will vote for their favorites.  Celebrity judges will vote for individual categories including best appetizer, entree’, sandwich, dessert, and most attractive booth.  The public can vote for the Peoples’ Choice Booth.

Entertainment will feature the Chris Oxley Quartet performing at 6:00 p.m. on Main Street., 2 Johns on Neville Street at 6:30 pm, and the Piney Creek Canyon Band at 7:00 p.m. near the intersection of Fayette & Main Streets. A Kids Zone area will be offered by Faith Community Church. The annual Oreo stacking contest by Southern Communications will also take place.

The event also offers an opportunity to take a Ghost Tour — a unique candlelit walking tour of historic sites in Beckley led by John Luckton.  The tour will begin in front of the courthouse at 8:30 p.m. Please call 304-256-TOUR for reservations ($).
