The City of Beckley will celebrate an Irish / Celtic Heritage themed week on March 11–17, with a variety of activities – road bowling, a concert, food specials, axe-throwing, & a painting class.
Saturday, March 11 (rain date 3/18) – Irish Road Bowling demo on McManus Trail – Mark Whitt will offer a road bowling intro/demonstration and attendees can practice a few throws for fun along a section of the trail. Meet at the trail shelter located near Prince Street and McDonalds at 11 am. FREE event, 11 am – noon.
Sunday, March 12 – Irish/Celtic Concert Event at The Raleigh Playhouse & Theatre (Free admission / Donations accepted for the Bill Withers statue)
Sponsor: Irish Heritage Festival / WV Div. of Culture & History grant.
Schedule:
3:30 pm – Irish/Celtic Heritage in southern WV – David Sibray
3:35 pm – Irish/Celtic music & sing-along with Patrick O’Flaherty
4:35 pm – Bagpiper Mark Whitt
4:45 pm – Celtic dance by BDTS – tentative (depends on competition schedule)
5:00 pm – Meet the performers at an after-party at The Axe Hole, Neville Street
Tuesday-Friday, March 14-17 – Irish/Celtic Food Week at local restaurants:
– Lunch specials at Fruits of Labor & Beckley’s Historic Black Knight
– McDonald’s featuring Shamrock Shakes
– Friday, March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day:
o Lunch and dinner Irish specials at Fosters on Main Street
o Lunch and dinner Irish specials at Fruits of Labor on Neville Street (dinner by reservation – call 304-252-9421 to select 4:30, 5:45, or 7:00 pm)
o Other local restaurants/bars offer Irish-themed food and drink specials.
o Check out The Axe Hole on Neville Street – $5 off axe-throwing if wearing green (noon-7pm); then, Black Light event at 8 pm ($50 per lane, up to 5 people).
Friday & Saturday – Celtic Highland Cow Canvas painting class at The Pottery Place – Friday, March 17 at 6 pm and Saturday, March 18 at 11:30 am. Fee = $30 (16 x 20 canvas). Reservations required – call 304-253-8777.
