Juneteenth commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas, and, more generally, the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans throughout the former Confederacy. Its name is a combination of “June” and “nineteenth,” the date of its celebration.
Here in Beckley, the Juneteenth festival scheduled is set for Thursday through Sunday:
Thursday — Spirit of Change honors award’s ceremony at Central Baptist Church from 6 to 8 p.m.;
Friday — Pool party at New River Park, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.;
Saturday — Cemetery restoration at Hunter’s Graveyard, the corner of S. Fayette Street and Antonio Avenue, in Beckley at noon;
Sunday — Community Cookout Family Day at New River Park, shelter No. 1, from 3 to 6 p.m.
