Bessie Smith (April 1894-Sept 1937) was an American blues singer nicknamed The Empress of Blues. Smith was the most popular female blues singer of the 20’s & 30’s and is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era.  This Saturday come check out Beckley’s own Lady D as the one and only Bessie Smith. Lady D has been performing this original play for 12 years. Queen Latifah will be bringing Bessie to television in May but we think you should check out Lady D’s version first. Come help us celebrate Women’s History, Black History, Music History and American History!
