Bessie Smith (April 1894-Sept 1937) was an American blues singer nicknamed The Empress of Blues. Smith was the most popular female blues singer of the 20’s & 30’s and is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era.  This Saturday come check out Beckley’s own Lady D as the one and only Bessie Smith. Lady D has been performing this original play for 12 years. Queen Latifah will be bringing Bessie to television in May but we think you should check out Lady D’s version first.
